|
Pruning and Maintenance:
· Time – only time cannot be pruned is in Spring
· Bloom on new wood so pruning down to the ground will not hurt it. The stems will support the flower heads better if they are not pruned all the way back, but are allowed to thicken with age. Remove dead, damaged or weak stems in later Fall or early Winter
· Remove winter-damaged growth in early spring, if the plant had been left intact for the winter
· Prune for size, when necessary, during the Spring. They can be cut anywhere on the plant that pruning is needed, but cutting new wood will affect flower development. Since it develops its flowers on new wood, last year's growth can be pruned as desired
|
Fertilize
· Late Spring (June or July) with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer 10-10-10 for flowering plants
· Do not fertilize after August as it may stimulate new growth that will be too tender to withstand the winter
· Too much fertilizer may scorch its leaves
· Don't put any fertilizer on the hydrangea if it is wilting
