Pruning and Maintenance:
· Time – Winter or Spring before Flowering (bloom on prior year’s growth)
· Renewal pruning – Prune 1/4 to 1/3 of oldest branches right down to the ground. This will encourage new growth and a more compact form
· When plant gets old, cut to ground level in Spring to rejuvenate vigorous new growth
· Cut off any branches growing or hanging close to the ground. Eventually, their weight causes the tips to touch the ground, grow roots, and start another plant
|
Shaping:
· Can be trained into single stemmed small accent tree
· Cut newer branches in order to improve upon the overall shape of your forsythia plants
· The best way to reduce the size of your shrub is to saw off some of the tallest, oldest canes close to ground level each year
|
Fertilize
· Feed in spring with an all purpose fertilizer prior to new spring growth
